Thurrock has the second-highest infection rate in the country
All of Essex will reach the same infection rate “within a week”, according to the UK’s Director of Public Health Dr Mike Gogarty.
“Nearly six per cent” of Brentwood and Basildon’s population of 77,000 and 187,000 respectively had tested positive, said Dr Gogarty.
In Greater London, one in 30 people are thought to have the disease, and the national figure is one in 50, according to the Office for National Statistics.
Thurrock has the second-highest infection rate in England with 1,471 people per 100,000 living with the coronavirus.
Essex has nine other districts topping 1,000 new cases per 100,000.
Castle Point, Epping Forest, Brentwood, Harlow, Basildon, Southend-on-Sea, Braintree, Rochford and Chelmsford have all reached the milestone.
The statistics were a result of rapid half-hour tests carried out around the county.
