She started the charity to help hundreds of under privileged children in the area but was “surprised” to win.
Maria says it is the testimonies of the families that inspired her.
“We all take for granted Christmas food, school uniforms and general housewares but when you talk to these families you realise that they are such a privilege. That’s when you realise we can all do a little bit more.”
She did it all while working a full-time job but hopes to get a grant next year that will allow her to focus on the charity.
“We can expand and attend more community meetings to see what’s needed on the ground level for next year.”
One thing S.M.I.L.E London and Essex needs more of is “manpower” and it is trying to attract more volunteers to help out in Havering, Barking and Dagenham.
It also has hostels in Newham and Southend for people living further away.
The decision was made by independent judges who found Maria “inspirational.”
The Mayor of Havering, Dilip Patel, presented her with the award on the Time 107.5 stage in Romford Market Place on Saturday.
Tiptoes in Hornchurch made the wonderful award, which is in the shape of a star.
There were more than 20 entries for the 2018 Local Hero competition, which had to be narrowed down to just four finalists. The other three were:
Roxanne Marshall, who volunteers her time to help others despite being disabled herself.
Lesley Hallett organises events and raises money for local charities. All of her free time goes towards community projects but she still finds time to run a business.
Lesley Davey, who is a community champion for Tesco. She also contributes towards local charities and will be spending Christmas Day serving food to those less fortunate.
