Tudor Simionov, 33, is understood to have recently moved from Romania to work in the UK.
He was part of the security team outside Fountain House in Park Lane, Westminster, when he was stabbed as a group of men tried to gain access to the venue.
A woman and two other men were also stabbed.
They were treated at the scene before being taken to hospital where their injuries were deemed not to be life-threatening.
“This shocking attack has left one man dead and three others with significant injuries,” said Detective Chief Inspector Andy Partridge. “The fact this takes place during the New Year celebrations has rightly captured a lot of attention.
“Mr Simionov and the two injured men were working as security staff for the private party when they were attacked by a group of males who were outside trying to enter.”
Tudor’s next of kin has been informed and a post-mortem will be carried out tomorrow to find his cause of death.
It is understood that he wasn’t meant to be working that night but was covering a shift for a colleague.
A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in custody at a central London police station.
DCI Partridge added: “While my team has already spoken to a number of witnesses, others are yet to be traced. It is understandable that some people may have left the scene immediately after having witnessed the attack, possibly not knowing how serious it was at the time. But now, knowing this has resulted in murder of Mr Simionov and the serious injuries inflicted upon the three other victims, they should come forward and assist the investigation.”
