Jai Sepple has been awarded for his work in turning a World War II memorial into Romford’s first theatre.
He said: “To receive any award is such an achievement and I’m absolutely thrilled. It’s really an award for everyone who’s helped overall, helped with the theatre and the war memorial restoration.”
“I got a couple of emails but they were all very nondescript. It was all a bit clock and dagger to start with but then we received a phone call and letter and confirmation that I was to be awarded, I couldn’t be more exited if I tried.”
The theatre regularly hosts musicals, plays, comedy shows and celebrity guests.
The British Empire Medal is given to those in recognition of meritorious civil services and entitles recipients to use BEM after their name.
