Police appeal for new witnesses to come forward to fatal collision in South Ockendon

Police are appealing for witnesses after a 43-year-old cyclist died in a collision in South Ockendon.

Alexandru Matei died after the crash in Arisdale Avenueat around 7.50pm on New Year’s Eve.

Investigators have released descriptions of two people they want to hear from, as the pair have not yet spoken to officers.

The first witness is a black man who was walking and on his phone at the time; the second is a man who was sat in a grey car near to the Next distribution centre at the time of the collision.

They are asked to call Essex Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting incident number 971 of December 31.

Ravinder Matharu, of Erriff Drive, South Ockendon, has been charged with causing death while disqualified from driving, causing death while insured, causing death by aggravated vehicle taking, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident.

The 31-year-old is next due to appear at Basildon Crown Court on Thursday, 31 January.
