The 46-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of murder after police found the victim suffering from critical neck injuries in Poplar.
“At this early stage it is believed that the victim was known to the suspect,” a police spokesperson said.
“Police were called by the London Ambulance Service (LAS) to a residential address in City Island Way, shortly after 4pm on Friday, 11 January, following reports of an assault.”
Officers believe the woman was in her 30s. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 4.17pm.
Her next of kin have been informed.
