Seven men charged for multiple violent break-ins in Thurrock

Seven men involved in two violent break-ins in Tilbury and Horndon-on-the-Hill have been convicted.

“The victims were a family with young children and a vulnerable elderly man,” said Detective Inspector Steve Nelson.

“They subjected the victims to brutal attacks, including an ordeal at the address in Horndon-on-the-Hill described in court as torture.

“The six defendants tried to convince the jury they weren’t responsible for these attacks and have shown no remorse at any stage.”

Grays man Jeremiah Johnson, along with Ayomide and Emmanuel Ijelu, Barry Douglas, and Salih Bulbuller have all been charged with aggravated burglary in connection with the incident in Tilbury.

Ayomide Ijelu, Jeremiah Johnson, Mark Bonsu, Wesley Williams, and Salih Bulbuller have been charged with robbery and possession of a firearm with intent in connection with the incident Hordon-on-the-Hill.

They all pleaded not guilty apart from Bulbuller who admitted aggravated burglary, robbery and possession of a firearm.

Following a month-long trial at Basildon Crown Court, they were all found guilty today.

They’ll be sentenced at the same court on Friday.

The Tilbury incident.

A group of men forced their way into the home of a man in his 70s in Tilbury in September 2017.

The victim was going to bed when his dogs growling alerted him to the danger outside his caravan.

He noticed four men by the window of a nearby bungalow and shouted at them to go away.

They retaliated by smashing his glass door and forcing their way in.

He attempted to fight them off with his walking stick but it was taken from him. The man then resorted to using a wooden chair but the criminals struck him over the head with a metal file.

The victim suffered significant injuries to his eye and face.

Fortunately, a neighbour heard the attack and shouted at the attackers, scaring them off.

The Horndon-on-the-Hill incident.

Over a week later, a group of men wearing masks and armed with a variety of firearms and knives forced their way into an address in Horndon-on-the-Hill.

It was in the early hours, when they entered a bedroom and threatened the people inside, demanding money.

One victim, a man in his 30s, was threatened with a gun which they used to repeatedly assault him on the head.

They also hit his hands and legs with a hammer and burned his hands, arms and shoulder with an iron.

A woman was assaulted and had duct tape put around her arms and across her mouth. The attackers also held a knife to a four-year-old young girls throat and assaulted a seven-year-old boy.

They ransacked the house and caused damage worth a four figure sum while stealing money, jewellery and electrical items.

The victims were then put into their own cars before they were driven to a field where the men forced them out and drove off, dumping the vehicles at another location.
