The remains of a man suffering from dementia have been found after eight years in Thurrock

Essex police have found the skeletal remains of a man who went missing eight years ago.

63-year-old Michael Forrest was last seen near his home in Ockleford Avenue, Chelmsford, on 7 December 2010.

His skeleton has been discovered on land near Lakeside by the A13 and the A126.

“Mr Forrest’s death is being treated as unexplained but there is no evidence anyone else was involved,” said Detective Superintendent Stephen Jennings.

“This is a tragic discovery and my heart goes out to his family. I hope it will bring them some closure though and give them some answers about what happened to their loved one.”

At around 11am on Friday, 3 January, workers carrying out work for Highways England near to the A126/A13 junction reported they had found a human skull.

Further searches were carried out in a wooded area between the A126/A13 junction and the Lakeside Sports Ground and the rest of Mr Forrest’s skeletal remains were discovered today.

Mr Forrest suffered from dementia and it is believed he was on a bus to the shopping centre when he went missing.

His family reported him disappearance but he failed to return home and didn’t attend two hospital appointments.

During the investigation, more than 8,000 letters and missing posters were delivered to local residents and businesses. Over 700 letters and posters were also sent to drivers of vehicles known to been in the area at the time Mr Forrest was last sighted.

Officers carried out more than 200 house-to-house enquiries and obtained more than 50 witness statements. They watched more than 250 hours of CCTV footage and searched 26 separate areas, including the lake near to Lakeside, as well.
