House of Fraser to remain open in Lakeside

A deal’s been reached to save the House of Fraser shop at Lakeside from closure.

The department store’s new owners had been at loggerheads with INTU, which owns the Thurrock shopping centre, about a deal to reduce the rent it pays.

House of Fraser was recently bought by Sports Direct and has now come to an agreement that will keep the store open for the foreseeable future.

“This is great news for over a thousand employees whose jobs have now been saved,” said Mike Murray, head of ‘elevation’ at Sports Direct.

They currently run one of the biggest units in the shopping centre, which also serves as an access point for anyone entering Lakeside via Chafford Hundred station.

“We would like to thank INTU and all of our colleagues for their hard work and patience throughout the past five months,” Murray added. “This shows further commitment to the high street and the turnaround of House of Fraser.”

It also means their shops in Metro Centre, Norwich and Nottingham will also remain open.
