Beam Energy, which was launched at Eastbury School in Barking yesterday, is completely green and uses electricity generated by wind turbines and solar panels.
It apparently takes just two minutes to get a quote and could save residents on average £91 annually, compared to the traditional Big Six energy companies.
Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, Darren Rodwell, said: “Nobody should pay more than they have to on their fuel bills. For too long prices have been increasing faster than most people can cope with, and we hear horror stories about people going without food and the bare essentials just so they can pay for heating to stay warm.
He added that tariffs will be around 10% cheaper than the Big Six companies for direct debit customers and Pay As You Go customers will be up to 15% better off.
The scheme isn’t just available for residents in the borough, anyone can switch over.
There have been a spate of closures for smaller energy providers recently but Cllr Rodwell believes Beam can thrive in what he calls a “cut-throat” industry.
He said: “Because Barking and Dagenham Council backs this, and works with other councils throughout the land, you know you’ve got the stability of local authority but also the commercial pricing that beats say the top six.”
Beam Energy is not-for-profit and any money made by Barking and Dagenham goes into funding council services.
