Newham driver who struck baby with BMW sentenced to 18 months

A man who hit a child with his car has been jailed for driving offences in Newham.

37-year-old, Mantas Kaupas, of Sherrard Road, was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment after being convicted of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, 1 February and was also banned from driving for 33 months.

“It is only a matter of luck that the child did not suffer more serious injuries,” said Detective Constable, Adam Daisley.

“The fact that he drove away shows his distain at what he did.

“He lied to officers about this whereabouts that night but his alibi was quickly disproven by thorough investigative work.”

A couple were walking their 13-month-old child, who was in a buggy, along Upton Lane on 22 May 2017.

As they used the zebra crossing, close to the junction with Dunbar Road, a white BMW struck the buggy at around 10.55pm.

The baby was then taken to the Royal London Hospital where he received treatment for a head injury.

Fortunately, he was discharged a week later.

Kaupas sped away from the scene, driving through a red light in the process.

He was arrested the next day and denied driving the car.

On 26 June 2018 he was charged through postal requisition.
