A burglar has been jailed for nearly three years after being caught and held by one of the residents when he ransacked their house in Epping.

A brother and sister had returned to their family home in Nicholl Road on 8 February this year and found some of the rooms had been ransacked.

While they were there, three men ran out of the house and towards a car waiting outside.

The 23-year-old brother chased them and grabbed one of the suspects, 25-year-old Andrew Cash, as he was getting into the car described as a black Volkswagen.

It then drove off with him in the back seat, where he was repeatedly assaulted by the suspects.

The car was stopped in Station Road and the suspects tried to get the victim out of the car while threatening him with a knife or a screwdriver.

The victim pulled Cash out with him and kept hold of him until police arrived a short time later. The victim suffered a cut to his head, bruises and grazes.

Cash was charged with burglary and actual bodily harm. He admitted the charges when he appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court on Monday, 11 March and was jailed for a total of two years and eight months.

Nothing was stolen in the burglary and the other three suspects are yet to be identified.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Rob Guiney said: “The sentence given to Cash reflects the seriousness of his crime as this was a really nasty incident and it’s fortunate the victim was not seriously hurt.”
