Two shisha bars in Redbridge have been fined for breaking anti-smoking laws

Ajmal Ali director of Basement Shisha Lounge in Goodmayes Road pleaded guilty for allowing people to smoke within a substantially enclosed space last month.

He was handed fines of £1,800 along with costs of £1,555 and a victim surcharge of £120.

Shakil Islam, owner of Aladdins Shisha Lounge in High Road in Ilford was also charged for letting customers illegally smoke inside.

Islam was ordered to pay £1,800 as well as costs of £1,815 and a victim surcharge of £120.

In October last year during two surprise visits enforcement officers discovered breaches of anti-smoking legislation.

The prosecutions are part of a council crackdown on rogue shisha cafes, leading to five prosecutions and over £13,000 in fines already this year.

Shisha, or water pipes, are used to smoke mainly flavoured or non-flavoured tobacco or herbal mixtures.

Under the Health Act 2006, smoking tobacco or anything containing tobacco or smoking other substances in enclosed or substantially enclosed premises is an offence.

Barry Francis, Operational Director of Civic Pride said: “This is yet another warning to shisha bar owners who don’t obey the law that we will not hesitate to prosecute.  The rules are in place to protect the public and it’s our duty to make sure premises comply with the law.  Officers are working really hard to tackle rogue shisha venues and will continue to do so until they follow the rules.”
