The closure is causing traffic on the M25 and other major roads in the area.
The motorway had been closed but reopened at around 3pm, with hour-long delays.
Traffic on the road is stretching back to junction 29 for the A127 on the clockwise carriageway, while anticlockwise has delays going to junction 3 for the M20.
The A13 is also very busy near Lakeside as a result.
