Havering Council launches £40m road and pavement project

Work is already underway in parts of the borough.

Havering Council has launched its new £40 million project in upgrading the borough’s roads and pavements.

The investment, which sees £10 million spent in each of the next four years, was announced in budget proposals earlier this year.

That budget was passed in February and work is now underway to update the roads.

Councillor Damian White, Leader of Havering Council said: “Often when I go knocking on doors or talk to people, they complain about the state of the pavements and the roads.

“So this is the priority which we are acting upon to put the type of money and the level of investment needed for the roads and pavements to ensure they are up to a standard our residents expect and deserve.”

Havering Councillors, including leader Damian White, were present at today’s launch.

The launch event was held in The Mount, Noak Hill, where pavement improvement works are currently being carried out.

Eric Brown is a supervisor for Marlborough, the highways maintenance company carrying out the work on behalf of the Council.

“Obviously it’s a bit of a disruption pulling the whole footpath up and renewing it, but we do our best for the residents,” he said. “You’ve got residents that are really helpful because they want the work done and you’ve obviously got a few awkward ones that don’t want the work done.”

As part of the project, a new web page is being created so that road users in Havering can report potholes.

The website also has a section so that residents can find out when and where improvements are being carried out.

£10 million will be invested in each of the next four years.
