The amount of money paid to Havering Councillors has reduced by more than £60,000 in the last year.

The figure stands at just under £929,598.03 in the year to April 2019.

The previous year, it was £989,954.03.

Councillors are not paid, rather they are given an allowance to help them carry out their duties.

Some councillors with additional roles, such as cabinet positions or committee chairs or leaders of opposition parties, are given extra amounts.

Damian White, the leader of Havering Council, saw the amount he was given in allowances decrease by more than £3,000 compared to what his predecessor, Roger Ramsay, was given the year before.

All 54 councillors received a basic allowance of £10,208.04, down 12 pence compared to 2017/18.

Last year’s Mayor of Havering, Dilip Patel, was given an additional £10,666.66. In the year that he was mayor, he raised more than £80,000 for charity.

In comparison, the previous mayor, Linda van den Hende was given an extra allowance of £10,967.73.

In total the reduction in spending on allowances between 2017/18 and 2018/19 is just over 6%.
