Two jailed for life for murdering teenager in Barking

Hasan Ozcan was brutally killed in February 2018.

Two people have been jailed for life for murdering a 19-year-old man in Barking.

Hasan Ozcan was stabbed to death in Linsdell Road in February 2018.

He sustained seven wounds to his chest, abdomen, left arm and both thighs.

The fatal wound was to his thigh and severed several arteries, causing severe blood loss.

Appearing at the Old Bailey today, Kareem Lashley-Weekes, 21, was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum of 24 years.

A 16-year-old boy from Dagenham, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was also sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum of 19 years.

Both were found guilty of Hasan’s murder and violent disorder following trial at the same court.

Kareem Lashley-Weekes has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Kamaal Modest, 22, of Merton, who had been found guilty at the Old Bailey of violent disorder, was sentenced to 25 months in prison

Jonathon Efionayi, 22, of Lodge Avenue, Dagenham, will be sentenced on Friday after he was found guilty of violent disorder.

Investigators say the attack was an attempt at revenge after one of the defendants’ friends earlier in the same evening that Hasan was brutally murdered.

His family said: “Hasan was a loving, caring, considerate and compassionate young man who loved socialising and playing sports. He had a bright future ahead of him.

“He was studying criminology and had hoped to work with young offenders, when he was brutally murdered.

“He was a wonderful son to his parents, a caring and loving older brother to his two brothers and a devoted friend to all his friends. We all desperately miss him.”

Detective Sergeant Jake Ellis, of the Specialist Crime Command, added: “This was an unnecessary loss of life and Hasan’s family have been left devastated. He was set upon and brutally attacked in the street in the most violent way.

“Justice has been served but nothing can bring Hasan back so he can live the life he deserved.

“The dignity of Hasan’s family throughout this traumatic process has been remarkable.

“They were very nearby when Hasan was murdered and could only stand by while he was given first aid, which was ultimately in vain.

“That night will never leave them, nor will the loss of Hasan. I do hope that these sentences bring a small measure of comfort to them as they continue to grieve.”

Efionayi and Modest have been convicted of violent disorder

The Metropolitan Police says reducing violence on the streets of Greater London is a top priority for them.

But they say they can not solve it alone and local communities have a vital role to play in tackling violent crime.

In a statment, the Met Police said: “We want to hear from anyone who may have information about people who may carry knives or firearms, or who are involved in organised drug crime and violence. This information could save lives in the future.

“If you aren’t comfortable speaking directly to the police, please contact the independent charity Crimestoppers. They do not ask your name or trace your call.”

Young people with information about violence or knife crime can visit www.fearless.org to pass on information anonymously.
