The man avoided injury in the incident
It happened in Oakley Court, in the Hillyfields area, at around 4pm on Sunday, 21 July.
The homeowner said he heard noises coming from outside his property and an object, which is believed to be a device used at paintballing events, was put through his letterbox.
Despite the property being filled with smoke, the man was not hurt but his front door and hallway were damaged.
The teenagers, who fled the scene, were wearing tracksuits.
Four of the boys were white and the other two were black.
