An independent investigation has been launched into Mr Lennon’s death

A man who died after being detained at the ExCel Centre last week has been named.

Jason Lennon passed away last Wednesday, having fallen ill after being placed in handcuffs.

Police had been called to the Cundy Road area of Custom House at around 7.15am on Wednesday, 31 July to reports of an altercation.

There were concerns for Mr Lennon’s welfare, with police saying witnesses saw him throwing himself at passing vehicles.

He then made his way into the ExCel Centre, were security guards detained him.

After he became unwell, first aid was given and Mr Lennon was taken to hospital but he sadly passed away.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is now looking into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Regional director Sal Naseem said: “My thoughts and sympathies are with Mr Lennon’s family, friends and all those involved in the incident.

“We have made contact with Mr Lennon’s family to explain our role and offer support. We will provide regular updates to his family and the officers involved about the progress of our independent investigation.”
