The fire destroyed some car workshops, containers and grassland between 7.50pm and 10.50pm last night.
40 firefighters were called to the scene and used a drone to locate parts of the inferno that were not visible from the ground.
The thermal imaging camera can reportedly detect heat sources as small as a duck and provided infrared images once the light had gone.
It is also used to check the temperature of cylinders at risk of exploding.
There have been no reported injuries so far and the cause of the fire is unknown.
Crews attended from Barking, Ilford, Dagenham, Hornchurch, Romford and Wennington.
They received 36 calls about the blaze.
