Man admits causing death by careless driving of Romford motorcyclist

Donald Ukwunnah passed away at the scene of the crash last September

A pensioner from Havering Park has pleaded guilty after a motorcyclist from Romford died in a crash.

Bus driver Donald Ukwunnah, 38, passed away after the collision on the A113 London Road in Stapleford Tawney last year.

David Harknett, of Patmore Way, admitted causing death by careless driving today at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court.

The collision happened on Saturday, 1 September 2018.

Mr Harknett, 79, was travelling in his Peugeot with a woman when their vehicle collided with a Yamaha motorbike.

The rider, Donald, sadly died at the scene.

Mr Harknett and his passenger were taken to Queen’s Hospital for treatment.

In a statement released shortly after his death, Donald’s family said: “Donald was a British-born family man described by all who knew him as a gentle giant.

“He was a long serving bus driver for more than 17 years. An avid traveller, he enjoyed exploring different parts of the globe. He was also a loving father, son, brother and uncle.”

Harknett is due to be sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court on Wednesday, 4 September.
