The concept aims to help members reduce their food shopping bill by paying £10 per month or £3.50 per visit to access roughly £20 worth of shopping each week.
The clubs are based at the William Bellamy Children’s Centre in Dagenham, Marks Gate Community Centre in Chadwell Heath and the Osborne Centre in Dagenham.
To qualify for a membership (one per household), individuals must be residents of the borough, on a low income or experiencing financial difficulties.
Councillor Sade Bright, Cabinet Member for Employment, Skills and Aspiration, said: “The community food clubs are one of the many ways we are working with our residents to help them help themselves.
“Members not only end up with a reduced food bill, but also get help and advice on a range of issues.
“I am grateful to the staff, volunteers, community health champions and our partners who have worked so hard to make this scheme a success.”
