The passengers were forced to walk across the track (credit: Neil Moorey)
Footage shared on social media by Neil Moorey show hoards of people on the track at the c2c station.
He told Time 107.5 he filmed it at around 6am today, although c2c says the gates were open in time for the third train of the day: the 6.04am train to Fenchurch Street.
It is understood all the gates and shutters at the station were locked, forcing those heading to work to take matters into their own hands.
According to witnesses, trains were still running and faced little disruption.
A c2c spokesperson said: “We’re very sorry that customers were locked out of Rainham station first thing this morning.
“As soon as we realised our error, a member of staff was sent to unlock the station, which was opened in time for the third train of the day.
“Anyone who was delayed for 30 minutes is eligible for a 50% refund.”
