A parking sign in Romford Market
Council leader Damian White, who said “bah humbug” to the practice earlier this year, made the announcement this afternoon.
Free parking was removed from Upminster and Hornchurch town centres in June, with fares across the borough being increased to cover a series of road and pavement repairs.
The controversial move sparked a series of protests from local residents and businesses.
Cllr White today said: “I am pleased to announce that we are making it free to park in our car parks at the weekend from Saturday, 30 November.
“This means that shoppers can enjoy our high streets, support our local shops, and buy Christmas presents and other goods and services.
“So we want our residents to support our local shops and use them. We hope that offering free parking at the weekends in the lead up to, and just after, Christmas, will encourage them to make the trip and buy local.”
The free parking will begin on Saturday, 30 November 2019 and be available every weekend until Sunday, 5 January 2020.
This will only be available in council car parks and does not include on-street parking.
