“The best Christmas present we could have asked for” – Hornchurch girl Isla Caton declared cancer-free

Isla has been battling cancer since March 2016

Isla Caton has been declared cancer-free following her latest round of treatment.

The five-year-old from Hornchurch has been battling neuroblastoma since being diagnosed in March 2016.

Her story has been told around the world, with her family having successfully raised around half a million pounds for treatment.

Isla has received support from West Ham United, the club her family supports, as well as celebrities such as James Corden and Danny Dyer.

Much of Isla’s treatment over the past couple of years has been carried out in Barcelona, meaning Isla and her parents Nicola and Michael have been living in Spain.

Isla does still have to undergo a round of antibody in December but should be able to return to the UK before Christmas

After revealing the news on social media, Isla’s mum Nicola told Time 107.5 she was delighted that they would now be able to spend the festive season at home.

“I’m so excited to be able to take Isla home,” she said. “It’s going to be amazing, the best Christmas present we could have asked for!

“It was very touch-and-go because we finish on the 20th (of December) … but we don’t care as long as we get her home and I get to be with both of my children and my family.”

In 2020, Isla will have to return to Barcelona and have some radiotherapy to her leg. Then, hopefully, she will go to New York to have a vaccine which is hoped will ensure the cancer does not return.

Nicola said: “The vaccine is seven injections over one year and it is supposed to prevent the neuroblastoma coming back. It’s supposed to make sure her body can fight against it.

“But it is a trial, so I do know some children have relapsed. But we have to give Isla every chance we can so hopefully it will be the end; after that, she will just be monitored for the next five years.

Isla herself has relapsed three times since she was first diagnosed, so Nicola says they are going to continue fundraising.

“We probably don’t have quite enough money to pay for everything that’s going to go on. But we’re also going to try and do something once or twice a year just so that she always has some kind of money as a backup.

“She’s relapsed now three times. If we didn’t have the money, we never could have gone abroad which would have meant she would have died.

“We desperately need to make sure she always has some kind of backup … obviously, if it’s not used, we’ll donate the whole lot to a worthy course.

“We’re absolutely overwhelmed by the love and support. Each and every person that’s donated and shared has made it possible for Isla to get here today.

“Without these people, we never ever would have had the money and we couldn’t have gotten her the medical treatment.

“We are so grateful. We don’t ever know how we’ll make it up to these people but we just know that we’ll try and do our best in life and teach Isla to be kind and give and try make it up to the universe because every person that’s donated has saved Isla’s life.”

If you would like to carry on supporting Isla, you can donate here.
