A teenager from Havering has been ordered to pay £300 in compensation after attacking a staff member at Grays train station.

The 17-year-old boy punched the victim in the head after trying to force his way through a barrier on Monday, 4 March 2019.

He then proceeded to get on a train without buying a ticket.

At Basildon Magistrates’ Court last week, he pleaded guilty to GBH.

The teen, who cannot be named due to his age, was made to pay the compensation to the victim and was also handed a 12-month youth referral notice.

Investigating officer DC Gemma Notton, from British Transport Police, said: “It is awful to see a member of rail staff so violently assaulted for simply trying to do their job. We will never tolerate rail staff being abused or targeted with violence and will always look to identify offenders and ensure they face justice.

“I have worked closely with the victim and, as a result of this teenager’s shocking actions, I can see the impact they now have on his life. I hope this conviction provides them with some comfort.”
