Romford man takes part in seven day challenge to raise awareness of mental health

Scott Squibb is taking part in ‘The Medicine Ball Challenge’

A man from Romford is taking part in a seven day challenge to raise awareness of mental health.

Scott Squibb, who’s currently serving in the army reservists, will be chained to a four kilo ball for the week as part of ‘The Medicine Ball Challenge.’

The object is said to represent the weight, and burden service personnel, veterans and people from all walks of life could be carrying around with them, due to mental health problems.

After the seven days, the ball will then be passed on to another participant elsewhere.

Individuals all over the country have been involved.

A Just Giving page has also been set up alongside the challenge to support the mental health charity, Combat Stress, who support veterans affected by anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

It’s problems such as these which have led to the number of mental health related deaths of Veterans Soldiers and the blue light services to rapidly rise.

Scott will have the ball with him everywhere for the next seven days-including on the train!

Scott took up the challenge after suffering from depression himself.

He told Time 107.5: “It took me a long time to admit that I had depression. Everyone around me saw it.

“I still find it a taboo now but I feel it’s important that if I’m going to do this challenge, I’ve got to be honest to other people and myself.

“When someone says ‘Why are you doing it,’ I can then explain from a first hand point of view, the reason why.

“Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean someone doesn’t have a weight on their shoulders.

“The suicide rate at the moment is phenomenal, it’s ridiculous and not just among armed forces but in general.”
