The 16-year-old was approached by the suspect at around 5.45pm on Friday, 6 March.
He reportedly tried to engage her in conversation but she walked away.
At this point, the suspect grabbed her around the waist.
The girl pushed him away and threatened to call the police, causing the man to run away.
He is described as white and in his mid-40s.
Anyone who witnesses the incident, or may have CCTV or dashcam footage, is asked to call Essex Police on 101, quoting the crime reference number 42/36113/20 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
