Patrols in parks and open spaces around Barking and Dagenham, are being increased to ensure residents are practicing social distancing rules.

Over 150 members of the public were moved on from the parks over the weekend, for ignoring the guidance, despite signs being put up and play areas taped off.

Parks currently remain open so that residents can use them for daily exercise.

The Council have installed signs with the Government’s guidance on social distancing and taped off outdoor gym and play areas to keep people safe.

Tape had previously been torn down, and people were still using these areas.

As the virus can live on some surfaces for days, the Council have reiterated the importance of keeping these areas out of bounds for now.

Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, Councillor Margaret Mullane said: “We are aware that some residents are still continuing to ignore the social distancing rules in our parks and open spaces.

“This is despite the fact that certain areas, like outdoor gyms and play equipment, have been taped off and signage explaining the rules has been installed.

“We don’t want to have to follow other London boroughs in closing our parks, but it’s really important that people follow the rules to protect themselves and everyone else.

“This is why we are increasing patrols in the following days and people will be fined.”
