Initiative launched in Brentwood to encourage food donations for vulnerable residents

An initiative has been launched in Brentwood to encourage shoppers to make food donations for vulnerable residents.

The scheme, named ‘Can in a Van,’ will be taking place on Thursday, 14 May at Brentwood’s Sainsbury’s and Marks & Spencer stores.

Shoppers can drop a food donation into a red crate in the vans parked outside the entrances of both stores.

The supplies will then be taken and held at the Town Hall to be distributed to those living in the area who need help.

Brentwood Council has teamed up with community groups to run the day including Brentwood Foodbank, The Daily Bread Café in Hutton and Manna Meals.

They are being supported by Lighthouse Furniture Project who are helping to transport foodstuffs to these hubs and the council’s community safety teams.

Any ingredients supplied will be given to Manna Meals to enable them to make ready made meals, which can be added to the emergency food parcels to support those residents that need assistance.

Manna Meals has also produced a set of shopping lists that you can cut out and take with you, and donate any items when you leave the supermarket.

Foodbank have also provided a longer shopping list of items that can be included in the food parcels.

The day follows the previous success of Saturday, 21 March where more than £1000 in food and goods were donated, via the same scheme with local supermarkets Sainsburys, M&S and Iceland.

Brentwood Council leader, Cllr Chris Hossack, said; “This initiative is to help boost the stocks and donations that the community groups have so that there is plenty for everyone who needs it.

“The first Can in a Van was exceptional in the way residents donated and I know that they will do the same again.

“Everyone wants to help in some way if they can and the Can in a Van is an ideal way to contribute whatever you can afford.

“We have to observe social distancing of course as safety for all is top of the priorities but with all the community groups reporting an increase in the number of people coming forward for help, this is a great opportunity to donate and know that you are making a difference.”

Donations can be made between 7am and 5pm on Thursday.

If you are would like to donate any food, then there is also a drop off point outside the Town Hall.
