Appeal after ‘Tommy Silhouette’ memorials of fallen war heroes ripped from stands in Purfleet on Thames

A number of memorials were ripped from their stands.

Police are appealing for information after Tommy Silhouette memorials of fallen war heroes were damaged in Purfleet on Thames.

The vandalism at Purfleet Garrison Community Centre, off Centurion Way, was made between 8pm on Friday, 29 May and 10am on Saturday, 30 May.

A number of statues were ripped from their stands and others were broken.

Chief Inspector Natalia Ross said: “The statues were put in place to commemorate those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars.

“They were enjoyed by the community and centre visitors who wanted to pay their respects.

“Sadly, they were damaged – possibly beyond repair – in despicable acts this weekend.

“A dedicated officer has been allocated to the investigation to look into the circumstances and to find those responsible.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Grays police station on 101 quoting crime reference 42/76981/20.

Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

A fundraising page is in place for those wanting to help contribute towards costs of replacing the silhouettes. To donate, click here.
