A police cordon has been set up around the crime scene
Emergency services rushed to Wilmington Gardens at around 2.15pm today after reports that shots were fired.
A second man is in hospital with injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening and police say the second victim was not shot.
Footage reportedly from the scene appears to show an injured man inside a car, which has a small hole in the windscreen.
In a statement, the Met said: “At this very early stage there have been no arrests. An extensive crime scene is in place as officers work to fully establish what happened.
“If you saw the incident, or have images or video that could assist police, please call 101 ref CAD 3913/4 June.
“Alternatively, to remain anonymous contact the independent charity Crimestoppers.”
There have been heightened gang tensions in the last week in Barking with three section 60 orders being implemented since Saturday, 30 May.
It is not yet clear whether this incident itself is gang-related.
