A car driving on the anti-clockwise carriageway hit the central reservation before leaving the road between junctions 28 and 27 at around 8.10pm yesterday.
The driver and a passenger were both trapped inside the vehicle. Essex County Fire and Rescue worked with the Ambulance Service to release them by 8.35pm.
Sadly the driver passed away at the scene from his injuries.
The passenger suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution.
Police closed off the road for a number of hours while they carried out an investigation.
They are appealing for anyone with information or dash cam footage to contact their Serious Collision Investigations Unit on 101 quoting incident 1142 of 16/06.
