Man from Tilbury charged after hammer incident in Grays

Police charged Richard Johnson over the weekend

A 28-year-old male from Tilbury has been charged after a man was threatened with a hammer in Grays.

The incident happened in Churchill Road, shortly after 8.10am on Saturday morning.

Richard Johnson of Gainsborough Avenue, was charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place; using threatening or abusive words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of or provoke unlawful violence; and a racially or religiously aggravated public order offence.

The suspect was also charged with receiving stolen goods.

A 29-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident was released without charge.

Richard Johnson is due to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court today.
