The southbound carriageway of the road has been closed after a multi-vehicle crash at the A12 junction just before midday today.
Multiple witnesses have said a person from one of the vehicles involved had gone through their windscreen and landed in the road.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police told Time 107.5: “One man, believed to be in his thirties, suffered serious injuries and has been taken to an east London hospital where his condition is believed to be life-threatening.”
A second person was also taken to hospital, according to the London Ambulance Service
“We dispatched two ambulance crews alongside an incident response office and team leader,” said an LAS spokesperson. “We treated two people at the scene and took them to a major trauma centre.”
The main carriageway of the A406 reopened shortly after 5pm, but there is heavy traffic in the area.
Queues along the southbound A406 are heading back to Waterworks Corner. There are also delays on the A12 and on local roads in Wanstead and Woodford.
