Driver jailed after causing fatal crash on A13 in Rainham while undertaking

The wreckage of the two cars after the collision

A man has been jailed for causing a fatal crash on the A13 in Rainham, after he collided into a car in the hard shoulder while trying to undertake traffic.

Mohammed Ali, of Barnet Grove, Bethnal Green, had been driving at more than 100 miles per hour in the moments leading up to the crash.

The 21-year-old had been in lane three of the eastbound carriageway, speeding past other vehicles in the road when his BMW was blocked by another car.

Ali then attempted to undertake by moving from lane three to lane one but lost control and crashed into a Vauxhall Astra which was stationary on the hard shoulder.

The Vauxhall had pulled over so its driver, Kenneth Berry, could clear some debris from the vehicle. The 54-year-old was getting out of his car when the collision happened.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the crash, between Ferry Lane and New Road, at around 9.50am on Tuesday, 20 March 2018 but Mr Berry had suffered fatal injuries and passed away at the scene.

Ali, who was 18 at the time, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing death by driving a vehicle while uninsured.

Today, he was sentenced to five years and seven months’ imprisonment.

Mohammed Ali pleaded guilty to causing Mr Berry’s death

Detective Inspector Jose-Paulo Qureshi said: “Firstly, I would like to thank the many witnesses who have assisted in this enquiry. It was as a result of their information that we were able to build up a picture of Ali’s dangerous driving.

“Ali’s speed and dangerous manoeuvring that morning led directly to Mr Berry’s death. This is a busy road and all the people using it that day were put at risk. Mr Berry has paid for Ali’s stupidity with his life, I am glad Ali will now face the consequences.”
