People drinking in public in Romford Town Centre can be fined
The current Public Space Protection Order has been in place since 2017 but is set to end in October.
A consultation has been launched so residents can have their say on whether it should be renewed.
The measure prevents people from consuming or carrying open containers of alcohol in the town centre except in licensed premises.
Anyone who breaks the rules can be given a Fixed Penalty Notice.
However, the order does not affect people drinking in clubs, pubs and bars. It also does not stop people from buying alcohol from off-licenses in the town centre as long as it is consumed elsewhere.
“Our current powers to deal with alcohol-related problems in the town centre are due to lapse in October,” said Councillor Viddy Persaud.
“Extending these plans will help ensure we have powers to continue cracking down on this unacceptable behaviour in the town centre.
“Your views can help us make sure it’s a safe and enjoyable space for everyone.”
If you would like to respond to the consultation, you can do so here.
It runs until Monday, 14 September.
