Orient thanks Spurs fans for buying O’s merch after fixture cancellation

Tonight’s EFL Cup match between the two sides has been called off

Leyton Orient has thanked Spurs fans who have bought O’s merchandise due to tonight’s game being cancelled.

The EFL Cup third round tie between the two local rivals was called off today, after a number of Orient players tested positive for Covid-19 yesterday.

No decision has been made about if the match will be rescheduled at a later date.

Orient chairman Nigel Travis has pleaded with the EFL for the game to take place, rather than the O’s having to forfeit and giving Spurs a bye to the next round.

The situation is complicated by Spurs’s congested schedule; they are playing in the Europa League on Thursday, an away tie against North Macedonian side KF Shkendija.

Spurs are then due to face Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday, and the fourth round of the EFL Cup is due to be played out next week.

A Spurs fan took to social media site Reddit, to suggest fans buy items from the Orient online store, to help make up some of the income lost from the cancellation of tonight’s match.

Reddit user LouieX23 posted yesterday, and said: “Since the Leyton Orient game may well be off tomorrow, the club will likely lose the chance to make some money from TV rights. To help them out, please consider buying something from their site. Even if it’s as small as a scarf or hat, it can really help a wonderful football club in tough times!”

The thread has since received 116 comments, with many other Tottenham fans agreeing to help out, with many praising the club’s kits.

Orient has since posted on Twitter to thank Spurs fans for buying their merchandise.

Tonight’s game between the two sides had been billed by fans as The Justin Edinburgh Derby, after the former Orient manager and Spurs defender, who passed away in June 2019.

Spurs had planned to auction off their signed match shirts in aid of the JE3 Foundation, which was set up by Justin’s son Charlie.
