Adoption campaign launched in Havering

A nationwide campaign has been launched in Havering to encourage residents to consider adopting a child.

There are nearly 3,000 children in England waiting to find a new family and the number of adoptions taking place across the country has dropped by a third in four years.

The YouCanAdopt campaign is aiming to challenge misconceptions about who is eligible to take on the responsibility. Many residents still believe single, older and LGBTQ+ people are unable to adopt, which is not the case.

A new film is being released to tackle these myths, featuring singer Sinitta, TV vocal coaches Carrie and David Grant and other adoptive families.

“Our adoption journey began over eight years ago when we adopted our son, Nathan,” said Carrie.

“We already had three biological children, but we had room in our hearts and knew we had the opportunity to offer another child a loving home.

“Adopting our son wasn’t an easy thing to do, but it was the right thing to do and a fantastic thing to do.

“He’s a Grant now, every bit as much as his sisters. I’d encourage anyone thinking about adoption to take the first step and find out more. It’s been such an incredible journey for our family.”

A podcast series is being released to provide more information about the adoption process which has become simpler and quicker over the years.

“The future of many children depends on adults exploring adoption and taking the first step towards becoming an adoptive parent,” said Councillor Robert Benham, Havering’s Cabinet Member for Education, Children and Families.

“Some people assume that because of their age or marital status they won’t be able to adopt, but that is simply not true, adoption is a choice for people who want to become a parent.”

The campaign is also targeting potential parents from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, as children from these backgrounds traditionally wait longer to be matched with a new family.

It is also urging people to consider adopting older children, sibling groups and those with complex health needs or a disability.
