Only those receiving end-of-life care will be allowed visitors
The number of positive tests in the borough has been rising since mid-August, with 158 confirmed cases in the week ending Friday, 2 October.
And Havering Council has now made the request to care homes to limit visitors to stop the spread among vulnerable groups.
Only those receiving end-of-life care will be allowed to have visits from their families.
But care homes are being encouraged to allow outdoor visits where possible.
Mark Ansell, Director of Public Health for Havering, said: “With a rapid rise in the number of Covid-19 cases locally, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to ask our care homes to restrict non-essential visits to their residents.
“The restriction doesn’t apply to residents receiving end of life care and their families.
“We understand that receiving family visits plays a large part in residents’ mental health and wellbeing, so if homes are able to accommodate outdoor visiting for relatives, we would encourage them to continue to do this.
“The recommendation also doesn’t seek to restrict essential visits by health and other professionals, so they will still be able to go into the homes to provide vital care and support.
“Everyone needs to do their bit to help stop the spread of Covid-19 locally and hope these steps will mean that families can fully return to visiting their loved ones soon.”
