Thurrock Council leader issues appeal as Covid-19 infection rate surges

Cllr Rob Gledhill says residents must act as if everyone they meet has the virus (credit: Thurrock Council)

The leader of Thurrock Council has called on residents to obey coronavirus restrictions as the area now has the highest rate of Covid-19 infections in the country.

One in 100 people in the area has coronavirus and that figure could rise to one in 50 before New Year if the virus continues spreading at its current rate.

“We are dealing with a new strain of the virus which is over 70 per cent more infectious than the original coronavirus,” said Councillor Rob Gledhill.

“In Thurrock it has caused a massive increase in the number of people infected, especially in the 11-18 year old age range, and unless we all take action it will continue to spread.”

On Sunday, Thurrock was placed into tier 4 restrictions which meant non-essential shops, hairdressers and leisure venues all had to close.

People are also no longer allowed to mix indoors with anyone from another household.

“Thurrock is facing a situation every bit as grave as that which we faced in March this year and we must all react appropriately,” added Mr Gledhill.

“We all need to be cautious, only make journeys if they are absolutely essential and abide by the government advice for tier 4 restrictions.

“We must now all act as if everyone we come in contact with has the virus and do everything we can to limit our exposure to it.”

Tier 4 restrictions are due to be reviewed on Wednesday, 30 December.
