Grays drug dealer jailed after trying to evade police

Police caught William Mulenga with £200 worth of cocaine (credit: Essex Police)

A drug dealer from Grays has been jailed after trying to evade police and committing further crimes while under investigation.

William Mulenga was first spotted speeding in a Mercedes through a housing estate in Purfleet on Thursday, 2 July 2020.

The 28-year-old appeared to be trying to avoid officers and eventually pulled over in Wood Avenue where he quickly made off on foot.

He threw away items from his pockets while running away but was eventually caught in Arterial Road.

Officers searched him and found wraps of drugs on him. They also recovered the discarded items which included a phone with drugs marketing messages.

The wraps were later found to contain a mixture of cocaine and ketamine as well as one which only contained cannabis.

Mulenga was released under investigation while officers carried out further enquiries.

In December he was again spotted standing in Caspian Way with a cannabis joint on the ground next to him.

He gave officers a false name and when they searched his Toyota Prius they found £200 worth of cocaine and a mobile phone.

Mulenga admitted to supplying cocaine and being in possession of cannabis at Basildon Crown Court on Monday, 18 January.

He was sentenced to two-and-a-half years imprisonment on the same day.

“Our investigation showed Mulenga was running the Rico drug line between the end of June and mid-December last year,” said PC Joe Gillman. “His efforts to try and avoid arrest failed twice and he has now lost his freedom.

“We continue to track down those trying to sell drugs in our communities and make sure they can’t earn money by taking advantage of other people’s misery.

“Anyone thinking it’s an easy way to make money should think again.

“The moment you get involved in drug dealing, you not only risk being caught and losing your freedom but you are at risk of reprisals from rivals, and the serious levels of violence that gangs use. It’s not worth your life or that of your loved ones.”
