One of the UK’s leading environmental charities has presented Redbridge Council with a national award for its work tackling fly-tipping.

Keep Britain Tidy presented the borough’s Neighbourhoods and Streetscene Team with the Outstanding Service Delivery award at their Network Awards 2021 yesterday.

It recognised their effort tackling a rise in fly-tipping across the area between March and June 2020, when the first wave of the pandemic hit.

The team had to find new ways of working due to the lockdown and came up with a new initiative called ‘Synergy in Civic Pride: One Big Challenge. One Brilliant Team’.

They developed workshops that taught residents how to reduce waste and how to dispose of it legally and properly.

Other initiatives included a litter picking service in fly-tipping hotspots, a 200 per cent average increase in penalty notices issued due to faster investigations, and an illegal dumping awareness campaign.

Councillor Jo Blackman, cabinet member for environment and civic pride, said he “couldn’t be happier for the team”.

“It’s a thoroughly deserved win and a testament to the great work being carried out by our Neighbourhoods and Streetscene team to continue addressing the issues important to our residents,” he said.

“Despite the pandemic, our staff have been delivering real results, cleaning up our streets and working with local people to improve our environment.”

The Keep Britain Tidy Network Awards recognise excellence and innovation in improveing local environment quality.

This year, there was a focus on maintaining key services in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Leader of Redbridge Council, Cllr Jas Athwal, also congratulated the team for winning the top award.

“Throughout the pandemic, we have had to find new and innovative ways to support local people, preserve our environment and prevent criminal behaviour like fly-tipping,” added Cllr Athwal.

“I’m proud of how council staff have delivered in these challenging times.”
