Two dogs have died after a blaze at a car workshop in Rainham.

Around eight fire engines and 60 firefighters were called to the scene in New Road at 4.57pm on Friday, 12 March.

A single-storey car workshop and a further car workshop with a mezzanine floor were both destroyed by fire.

Seven cars were also destroyed by the blaze.

Two dogs died at the scene.

In total, 12 gas cylinders were removed as a precaution and two of them were cooled to an ambient temperature as some cylinders can explode when exposed to heat.

Thick black smoke filled the sky and residents were advised to close their windows at the time.

The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers took 13 calls to the blaze.

Station Commander Neil Guyett said: “The whole of a single storey car workshop was damaged by fire.

“Firefighters remained at the scene throughout the night damping down small pockets of fire.”

The fire was under control by 7.59pm.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.
