A man from Limehouse has been given a suspended prison sentence after stalking and assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

After a brief relationship, Misbah Ali, of Repton Street, began regularly following the victim from her home to her university.

Between December 2019 and March 2020, he begged her to unblock him on social media, sent her threatening messages, and posted private photos on Twitter.

The 22-year-old also recorded a video message in her garden, saying how low the wall was and asking which room was the victim’s bedroom.

In February 2020, he smashed the rear window of the victim’s car with a brick and sent her a message saying “Wys (what you saying) ’bout the car if you snake more shit will happen don’t block man”.

He later approached the woman near her home and placed her in a headlock saying “why did you block me?” alluding to her blocking him on social media.

In March, Ali confronted the victim at her university and demanded her new mobile number and that she unblock him on social media.

The woman refused and Ali snatched her phone and laptop from her, hitting her on the head with the laptop. He then flipped over a table and grabbed the victim by the neck and strangled her.

Ali pleaded guilty to stalking and disclosing sexual images at Snaresbrook Crown Court and was given a two-year suspended prison sentence on Monday, 8 March.

He was also given a five-year restraining order which prohibits him from contacting or referring to the victim on any social media platform.

“Ali subjected the victim to a torrent of hate over a sustained period of time and his fixation caused her serious distress,” said Detective Sergeant Lee Gordon.

“Adding further insult to the victim, Ali made numerous false allegations about her to police. His actions demonstrated a blatant disregard for the safety and welfare of the woman as he continued his quest to ruin her life.

“I hope the sentence brings the victim a measure of comfort and that other women suffering from harassment or stalking are encouraged to come forward and speak to police.”
