Patrols have increased across underground stations in East London to support station staff and passengers when using the railway.

As part of ‘Operation Steed,’ a higher officer presence has been implemented at West Ham, East Ham and Upton Park stations, in a bid to also deter anti-social behaviour and theft.

The operation, which began at the start of the year, has been expanded this month to include Canning Town, Bow Road and Stepney Green stations.

British Transport Police have been conducting high-visibility patrols throughout the week, often with the support of plain clothed officers.

There has been 27 arrests made since the beginning of January, for offences including theft, fare evasion, trespass and public order offences.

70 reports for low level offences have also been issued.

Operation lead, Sergeant Sadiq Ali, explains what the operation is and how it supports frontline staff and passengers.

These operations are often supported by Transport for London’s Travel Support Enforcement officers.
