Delays on the roads remain after the closure was put in place between the Lea interchange and Old Ford, Bow, just before 9am this morning.
Queues are heading back to Bromley-by-Bow station northbound and back to the North Circular southbound.
Roads through Homerton are also slow as traffic diverts.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “At 08:41hrs on Tuesday, 27 April, police were called after concerns were raised for the welfare of a man on the A12.
“Officers are in attendance along with the London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade.
“The A12 is currently closed in both directions and people are advised to find alternative routes.”
