Officers received reports of racially aggravated criminal damage which happened at the Ilford Islamic Centre, in Albert Road, at around 11pm yesterday.
A group of men drove past the building and threw eggs and stones at people according to a statement released by the mosque.
It described the suspects as “a few burly looking white men, shaven headed” and said they were driving a “silver estate car”.
The vehicle drove down the dead end part of Albert Road during the attack and then drove off down Cleveland Road.
There were reportedly four security guards at the mosque but they did not see the vehicle’s exact registration as they were concerned the car “may have driven into them”.
Detective Chief Superintendent Stephen Clayman said: “We take all reports of hate crime very seriously and have launched an investigation.
“Incidents like this will not be tolerated and my officers will be undertaking enhanced patrols in the area to provide reassurance to the local community and visitors to the mosque.”
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police on 101.
