Firefighters battle fire at scrap yard in Silvertown overnight

Firefighters have put out a blaze at a scrap yard in Silvertown. 

A pile of 150 tonnes of scrap metal caught fire in Thames Road at 10.45pm last night. 

Around 70 firefighters and ten fire engines extinguished the blaze at 7.30am today. 

There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The blaze created a large amount of smoke and residents in the area were advised to keep their windows and doors shuts. 

Crews from Plaistow, East Ham, Poplar, Stratford, Barking and other neighbouring fire stations attended the scene.
