Ilford Food Centre ordered to close for repeatedly breaching Covid rules

A supermarket in Good Mayes has been ordered to shut for repeatedly breaking the government’s Covid regulations.

Ilford Food Centre, in Green Lane, was not following the rules during 15 out of 18 inspections between February and May 2021.

Barking and Dagenham Council enforcement officers found it failed to enforce face coverings for staff and customers and did not maintain social distancing.

Councillor Margaret Mullane, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “This business was repeatedly told by enforcement officers that it was breaking Covid regulations, however, it refused to take on board the advice given.

“We’ve shown throughout this pandemic that we will try and work with businesses to ensure that they’re following the rules, but we’re not afraid to take enforcement action if needed and we know this is something supported by residents.”

The shop has been issued with a direction notice and told to close immediately on Tuesday, 18 May. If safety standards are not improved, it could be closed for up to two weeks or longer.
